Amazon May Be Planning to Open 300-400 Bookstores

E-tailing behemoth continues trend of online businesses charting brick-and-mortar courses.

Walking in the footsteps of Warby Parker and other online retailers, Amazon may be embarking on a strategy to open 300-400 bookstores. That’s according to General Growth Properties CEO Sandeep Mathrani, who spilled the nugget during his company’s fourth quarter earnings call, Motley Fool writes. The article cites a report from the Wall Street Journal, which speculates that Mathrani – whose company owns the bulk of the country’s high quality malls – may have gotten his information from Amazon real estate executives. If the plan comes to fruition, Amazon would pose a serious threat to the brick-and-mortar existence of Barnes & Noble, which has 640 locations. Amazon opened its first U.S. bookstore in Seattle last November.
