AOA Announces Newly Revised Clinical Guideline Available for Peer Review

(PRESS RELEASE) ST. LOUIS — The American Optometric Association (AOA) announced the second edition of the AOA’s evidence-based clinical practice guideline, Comprehensive Adult Eye and Vision Examination, is now available online for a 30-day public review period.

The Comprehensive Adult Eye and Vision Examination guideline combines the best available current scientific evidence and research with expert clinical opinion to recommend appropriate steps in the diagnosis, management and treatment of adult patients with various eye and vision conditions.

“The ultimate goal of AOA’s clinical practice guidelines is to equip and empower doctors of optometry to markedly improve health care quality by ensuring patients are diagnosed and treated based on the best available scientific research,” said AOA President Robert C. Layman, O.D. “Putting this guideline out for public review provides an opportunity for an even broader perspective of input that’s critically important to this process.”

Developed by the AOA Evidence-based Optometry Guideline Development Group in accordance with standards outlined by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), the second edition of the Comprehensive Adult Eye and Vision Examination requires external review from relevant stakeholders, such as doctors, agencies, industry and the public.

To participate:

  1. Open the guideline draft for review.
  2. Access the AOA’s peer and public review form to log all comments and suggestions.
  3. Click “submit” on the online form; you will receive an email confirmation.

The peer and public review period officially begins September 29, 2022 and comments will be accepted through October 29, 2022. The finished guideline will be available later in 2023.
