Bausch + Lomb Enters $100 Billion Pets Industry with Health Care Products for Dogs

The pets industry is big business. Scratch that. (Pet pun.) It is a HUGE industry.

According to the pet insurance website Lemonade, about 70% of all U.S. households own a pet. That’s about 90.5 million of us!

Of course, the unquestioned leaders of the pack are dogs. An estimated 69 million U.S. homes have a dog. (For the curious: There are 45.3 million cat households in the U.S.)

And we absolutely adore our furry friends. Most of us consider them our “fur babies.” As such, we do whatever we need to do to care for them.

Americans collectively now spend more than $100 billion annually on our pets. On average, dog owners spend more than $1,200 a year on our pups.

It is no surprise then that we are continually seeing new pet products hit the market.

Bausch + Lomb Corporation entered the fray this week with an announcement of a new line of health care products for dogs. The global eye health company has developed specially formulated products “to help support dogs’ eyes, ears and overall wellbeing.”

The company said the idea originated during an employee’s experience caring for his rescue dog Watson. Fittingly, the new products bear Watson’s name.

Here’s the full lineup of Project Watson products:

  • Project Watson eye wash for dogs – a gentle, pH-balanced multi-purpose solution formulated to help cleanse irritants and debris from dogs’ eyes
  • Project Watson eyelid wipes for dogs – gentle, pH-balanced, pre-moistened textured wipes with micellar technology that cleanses and hydrates around the eyes to help remove excess buildup
  • Project Watson ear wash for dogs – a gentle, pH-balanced cleansing solution formulated to help support cleaning and care to help keep ears healthy
  • Project Watson ear wipes for dogs – gentle, pH-balanced pre-moistened textured wipes formulated to help support ear cleaning and care
  • Project Watson eye health supplement for dogs+ tear stain support – a daily chewable supplement with seven active ingredients to help promote eye health and help reduce tear stains in dogs, from the inside out
  • Project Watson eye + multi-health supplement – a daily chewable formulated with nine active ingredients to help support key areas of a dog’s health: eyes, joints, skin, heart and immune system

Bausch + Lomb says these offerings come with “the same expert care and unwavering quality as all other products in the Bausch + Lomb portfolio.”

The eye wash and two supplements will be available online starting in November at Chewy, Walmart, PetSmart and Amazon. The remaining three products will be available by the end of the year.
