Capitol Hill Lawmakers Investigate Contact Lens Pricing

Hearings on price floors called “exploratory.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee’s nine-member antitrust panel met last week to consider the decisions by three major contact lens suppliers to set minimum sales prices for their products.
The companies — Alcon, Bausch & Lomb and Johnson & Johnson — control about 77 percent of the market, and critics say their pricing action will result in higher lens prices. “More than 35 million Americans rely on contact lenses as an essential part of their daily lives, and these consumers deserve fair prices,” said Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN.), who heads the panel, which another member characterized as “exploratory.”
