Diet Soda May Contribute to This Vision Problem, Study Finds

Scientists have discovered a possible connection between drinking diet soda and developing proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Study participants who regularly consumed more than four cans per week of such beverages were more than twice as likely to have the condition compared with people who didn’t drink any, Healio reports.

The researchers did not find any association between consuming regular soft drinks and having proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

The study of patients with diabetes included 285 participants who consumed diet soft drinks and 190 who consumed regular soft drinks, according to Healio.

The researchers wrote, “These findings support the overall body of evidence suggesting that regular and frequent consumption of artificially sweetened beverages may have detrimental vascular outcomes.”

The study was published in the journal Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
