Envision Research Institute Appoints Dr. Jeremy Barton to Advance Research in Mobile Telemedicine for Low Vision

(PRESS RELEASE) The Gigi and Carl Allen Envision Research Institute (ERI) formally announces Dr. Jeremy Barton as a new Research Fellow. With a doctoral background in Applied Physics and extensive research contributions on human disease, Dr. Barton’s expertise will be invaluable to ERI’s research framework. His tenure, financed by the Lucier Family Fund, will primarily focus on the analytical evaluation of a novel mobile telemedicine device.

Michael Monteferrante, Envision President and CEO, stated, “ERI is committed to impactive and rigorous research aimed at removing barriers and challenging the status quo of what is possible in the daily lives of those who are blind or visually impaired. Dr. Barton’s inclusion will further bolster our research capabilities and potential outcomes.”

Dr. Barton’s research trajectory will center on an emergent tool designed for ophthalmological and optometrically diagnostics. This tool, while still in the developmental phase, will provide an efficient mechanism for physicians to obtain diagnostic images of the inner eye from geographically remote or atypical locations.

Dr. Barton, who has been visually impaired since birth, commented on his appointment, “It is an honor to collaborate with the Envision Research Institute. The institute’s ongoing interdisciplinary endeavors to fill gaps within the low vision technology industry are commendable and hold profound implications for countless individuals, myself included. I anticipate making meaningful contributions to this scholarly discourse.”

Highlighting the importance of the research, Greg Lucier, trustee of the Lucier Family Fund, remarked, “The preservation and enhancement of vision are critical aspects of human well-being. The Lucier Family Fund remains dedicated to supporting research and innovations with partners like Envision and Dr. Barton.”

Established in 2013, ERI has been a nexus for systematic investigation in the fields of low vision and blind rehabilitation, attracting international scholars. The institution’s objectives encompass elevating standards for patient care in visual impairment, facilitating early detection and treatment access, refining rehabilitation methodologies, and spearheading advancements in accessibility technology. ERI’s postdoctoral fellowships provide an academic setting wherein appointees conduct research to address the challenges faced by people who are blind or visually impaired.
