A failed Oklahoma proposal to allow eyecare services to be provided inside Walmart and other big-box stores in the state may not be dead yet.
Although voters rejected the proposal earlier this month, supporters of the measure may ask legislators to consider it once again, The Associated Press reports.
Supporters of State Question 793 say the state’s residents actually do want the key changes found in the bill. Oklahomans for Consumer Freedom, supported by Walmart, had collected signatures in support of putting the question on the ballot. The group said it wanted consumers to have “more choices, better prices, convenience.”
The Oklahoma Association of Optometric Physicians had opposed the measure.
AP quoted a spokesman for supporters saying that voters may have rejected the proposal because of specific provision, not because they disliked the general idea. Joshua Harlow “says some voters may not have wanted to amend the state constitution,” the news agency reports. They may also have disliked language that let retailers set the scope of practice, according to Harlow.
