Fast-Growing Chinese Eyecare Chain Targets US for Expansion

It currently has one U.S. location.

Aier Eye Hospital, a company that operates over 170 locations in China, is looking to the U.S. for growth, Forbes contributor Ellen Sheng reports.

In China, the company’s business model involves running eye hospitals in smaller cities and underserved areas. It will use the same approach in the U.S., according to Forbes.

Aier last year set up a U.S. subsidiary called Aier (U.S.A.) International Holdings Inc. and has since bought Wang Vision Institute in Nashville. The laser vision center is the practice of Dr. Ming Wang, an eye surgeon who is serving as CEO of the U.S. subsidiary.

The goal for now is to open locations in other Tennessee communities, Forbes reports. After that, Aier will consider building or buying eye hospitals nationwide.

Wang told Forbes that the U.S. clinics will “will have significant elective out-of-pocket paying procedures.”

The U.S. subsidiary has an initial fund of $50 million, according to the Tennessean.

The company “is building 20 hospitals a month in China with a goal of having 1,000 eye hospitals in the next few years,” the newspaper reports.

Aier also operates more than 75 locations in Europe, according to Forbes. In all, it employs 25,000 people.
