Google Sets Sights on Trademarking “Glass”

Not so fast, says U.S. Patent Office.

If Google gets its way, will you be selling or prescribing amorphous non-crystalline silicate for the eyes. Google wants to copyrights the word “Glass,” at least as it appears in the futuristic type font it has been using for it upcoming high-tech eyewear. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office isn’t so sure that’s feasible, however, according to their response to Google’s application. Distinctive typeface notwithstanding, the USPTO doesn’t think glass is a term that can be trademarked under federal law, which says that you can’t trademark words that describe a product. It also sees “glass” as “merely descriptive.”
