Jury Acquits Florida Eye Doctor of Healthcare Fraud

An ophthalmologist in Florida has been acquitted of Medicare fraud charges.

Dr. Lauren Rosecan was accused of healthcare fraud and submitting false statements to Medicare, the Miami Herald reports. He was acquitted on 22 counts by a jury in federal court.

Prosecutors argued that Rosecan, who leads the West Palm Beach-based Retina Institute of Florida, falsely diagnosed patients with eye cancer. He was then alleged to have charged Medicare for treatments the patients did not need.

The verdict represented “a rare loss for the U.S. Attorney’s Office” in court, according to the Herald.

Had he been found guilty, Rosecan could have been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison.
