Kentucky College of Optometry Gains Accreditation

The Kentucky College of Optometry is now accredited by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education.

The approval caps a five-year process, the Appalachian Express-News reports.

The program at the University of Pikeville had to meet standards in several areas, including curriculum, faculty, students and research.

Michael Bacigalupi, dean of the college, said the accreditation was a major milestone.

“It will help us with recruiting high quality faculty,” he told the newspaper. “It will help us with recruiting student applicants in the future because we are now at a leveled playing field with all the other optometry schools in the country.”

KYCO is the only optometry college in Kentucky.
