More Online Learning and More of What You Need to Know for May and June

E-Learning > Games

As school lockdowns kept millions of kids indoors, a report from Qustodio, a parental control software firm, found a 105 percent leap in digital homeschooling and 65 percent increase in online communications. This growth far outpaced all other online categories including social media, video games and entertainment, which grew at just 20, 30 and 8 percent. It shows the extra screen time kids are consuming during the pandemic is leaning more towards learning and staying social. Do the math: increased screen time means an opportunity for education on digital lenses and blue light blocking. qustodio.com

New Online CE

A partnership between Ireland’s Waterford Institute of Technology and Salus University Pennsylvania College of Optometry has created a new online training resource on nutrition and eye health. MacuLearn.com is the brainchild of Prof. John Nolan (Ireland) and Dr. James Stringham (Duke University Medical School), who are known for their research on nutrition and visual performance. The site offers open access to a range of COPE-approved video tutorials. Those who complete each session are tested with a short online questionnaire before receiving an online certificate as proof of successful completion. maculearn.com

COVID Tracker for the Blind

For those who are blind or visually impaired and rely on verbal reporting, the COVID-19 numbers they’re getting can be less reliable and the graphical format of most online trackers is impossible to access. Tyler Littlefield has developed cvstats.net, a COVID-19 tracker that makes critical statistics available in a text format that is easy to read and understand for people using screen reading software. The site breaks down infection, death, recovery and test rates globally and by country and by U.S. state. It’s a perfect resource for your visually-impaired patients who want reliable information. cvstats.net
