National Sight Week Assists Over 300 Patients

Free cataract surgery was provided.

(Press Release) FAIRFAX, VA – The American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery Foundation sponsored the second annual National Sight Week initiative Oct. 15-21. The weeklong event involved ASCRS volunteer surgeons and practices and provided free cataract surgery to over 300 patients around the country.

“National Sight Week is the culmination of our work to end preventable cataract blindness in the United States,” said Dr. Stephen Lane, chairman of the ASCRS Foundation Domestic Initiatives. “But we work year-round through Operation Sight to perform free cataract surgery for those patients in need.”

While this year’s National Sight Week is complete, the Operation Sight program runs year-round. Operation Sight is the ASCRS Foundation’s domestic charitable cataract surgery program. Its goal is to assist uninsured or underinsured American patients unable to obtain cataract care on their own. By leveraging the combined strength of established charitable organizations along with ASCRS-member volunteer surgeons, Operation Sight provides free surgery to eligible patients.
