Another Insurer Launches Vision Offering Through VSP

WELLESLEY, MA — Sun Life has added the Vision Choice plan to its vision offering.

Sun Life Vision plans, available through VSP Vision Care, offer a variety of plan design and co-payment options, as well as an elective contact lens rider. The plans provide access to VSP’s network of eye doctors and are accepted at more than 1,000 optical stores and online retailers nationwide.

For Sun Life, the offering rounds out a group benefits portfolio that includes dental, disability, life and voluntary (accident and critical illness plans), according to a press release.

“Vision coverage is a key component to an employee’s benefits package,” said Stacia Almquist, vice president, dental and vision, for Sun Life Financial U.S. “Often people don’t realize that eye exams can help detect larger health problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, so it’s important coverage to have. With the launch of our new vision plan today, we are able to offer our employer clients more plan design options to meet their employees’ unique health and financial needs.”

According to recent market research, employer-provided vision insurance has been steadily rising in popularity. In 2016, for the first time, vision enrollment tied with dental as the second-most popular election after medical coverage.

Sun Life’s new vision plan joins the recent widespread launch of its new dental network. The Sun Life Dental Network and Sun Life Dental and Vision plans are available in most states, according to the release.

VSP also recently signed a deal with Beam Dental to offer a selection of VSP Vision Care’s benefit plans across 10 states. The states covered are California, Texas, Illinois, Arizona, Ohio, Colorado, Washington, Utah, Wisconsin and Kentucky, according to a press release.
