No Testing of Novartis/Google Contact Lenses This Year, After All

The project is “progressing steadily.”

Novartis says human testing of its autofocus contact lens will not begin this year, after all, Fortune reports.

The lens is a joint project between the company and Google. Novartis CEO Joe Jimenez had said last year that testing could begin this year.

But Novartis now says it’s “too early to say” when the trials could start, according to Fortune. The project was announced in 2014.

The lens — it’s being developed by Novartis’ eyecare unit, Alcon, and Google spinout Verily — would help people with presbyopia. Novartis said the contact lens project is “progressing steadily.”

Fortune quoted a Novartis spokeswoman saying: “This is a very technically complex process and both sides are learning as we go along. We will provide updates at the appropriate time.”
