B+L Contact Lens Recycling Program

Bausch+Lomb reports that over 180,000 units of used contact lenses and blister packs have been recycled through their ONE by ONE Recycling Program in collaboration with TerraCycle. To date, over 1,800 optometry offices have signed up to recycle used contact lenses and blister packs through this free program, which collects contact lenses and blister packs of any brand at no cost. Bausch+Lomb educated consumers about the program during an Earth Day celebration on April 18 in NYC. For each pound of waste that is recycled through the program, Bausch+Lomb will make a $1 donation to Optometry Giving Sight. bauschrecycles.com

Snapchat’s Claim on ‘Spectacles’ Rejected

The Patent Trademark Office (PTO) has refused Snapchat’s application for trademark protection of the term “spectacles.” In the refusal letter, the PTO noted that the Snapchat application describes hardware and peripherals that are optical instruments, including lenses and a frame, and that the term “spectacles” is used to describe many other optical products, including an existing device advertised as a “spectacle with a camera.” The applied-for mark was determined to be merely a descriptive term and is not eligible for registration. Snapchat will not be able to claim and trademark ownership for the word “spectacles.”

Kering Eyewear and Cartier Partner

Kering Eyewear and Maison Cartier, owned by Compagnie Financière Richemont, plan to enter into a strategic partnership for the development, manufacturing and worldwide distribution of the Cartier eyewear collection. Under the agreement, which is subject to clearance by antitrust authorities, Richemont will acquire a minority stake in Kering Eyewear and Kering Eyewear will manufacture Cartier Lunettes. If successful, the Cartier 2018 Spring/Summer collection, launching at Silmo 2017, will mark the official beginning of the partnership. kering.com
