Shire Ophthalmics Names VP & Global Development Lead

(Press Release) Shire Ophthalmics announced that Sushanta Mallick has joined the ophthalmics team as vice president and global development lead for clinical development, ophthalmics.

Mallick has more than 20 years of experience in ophthalmology research and development. Although his primary area of development expertise has been in glaucoma, he has made significant contributions in the development of drugs for wet AMD, dry eye and inherited retinal diseases.

With a strong scientific background and an MBA with marketing and international management focus, Mallick provides a balanced perspective between the drug development and commercial needs.

He has made product presentations to ophthalmologists, healthcare providers and company sales teams in the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America.

Mallick most recently worked at Aerie Pharmaceuticals as vice president, clinical research/glaucoma.

Prior to that, he was vice president of research and development at QLT Inc. Vancouver where he led the R&D activities of the company and directed the development of oral synthetic retinoid as an orphan drug in inherited retinal diseases – LCA and RP.

Mallick was with Alcon for 19 years, holding positions of increasing responsibility starting from senior clinical research scientist, progressing to associate director, development, at Alcon’s corporate headquarters in Fort Worth, TX, and culminating in ESBATech, an Alcon Biomedical Research Company. As the clinical unit head based in Zurich, Switzerland, he directed two IND submissions for single-chain antibody fragments and designed and directed two proof of concept trials that resulted in successful outcomes in wet AMD and dry eye indications.

Additionally, Christie Markowitz has been appointed as the senior director and ECP marketing lead for Shire Ophthalmics.

Markowitz will report to Vic Noble, vice president and head of marketing for ophthalmics.

In this role, she will lead the ECP marketing team and the professional educational and marketing endeavors for the ophthalmics franchise.

Markowitz most recently served as the ECP launch lead for Xiidra (lifitegrast ophthalmic solution) 5% and executional rollout to the market.

She brings a wealth of experience and key skills to the ophthalmics team, including professional and consumer marketing, digital marketing, sales and sales leadership, training and marketing operations.
