Google Glass famously failed to catch on with consumers. But now the product, along with similar ones from competitors, is finding a niche, Insurance Journal reports.
Smart eyewear is finding major traction in manufacturing environments.
The devices “boost productivity by giving multi-tasking employees more flexibility to do their jobs without juggling a handheld iPad or laptop,” according to Insurance Journal.
Google’s Alphabet just launched Glass Enterprise Edition 2, the second version of its product. It’s good for viewing instructions, participating in video calls and sending pictures.
Microsoft Corp.’s HoloLens is a competing product that was recently adopted by Lockheed Martin Corp. for use in manufacturing spacecraft, Insurance Journal notes.
A variety of startup companies are also involved in the space.
“The hands-free aspect is what’s really revolutionizing our approach here. We’re shifting from the speed of your thumb to the speed of speech,” said Michael Kaldenbach, head of digital realities for Royal Dutch Shell Plc.
