A new proposal in Michigan would eliminate sales tax on contact lenses.

The legislative bill comes from state Sen. Dale Zorn, WWJ Radio 950 reports.

One reason for the proposal, he said, is that eyeglasses are already exempt from state sales tax.

He was quoted saying, “The result is higher costs on Michigan patients who wear contacts.”

He added, “The current process of taxing glasses and contacts differently is burdensome for eye doctors and confusing for patients.”

He said his proposal would save in excess of $12 million a year.
