In the fall of 2017, when a historic former gas station came up for sale, Stacey Jones, OD and her husband Jarrod Jones, a dentist, jumped at the opportunity.

Stacey and Jarrod Jones had dreamed of practicing under the same roof since they were young newlyweds in optometry and dental school, respectively, in the 1990s.

The location, in Hays’ historic Chestnut Street District, as it looked as a gas station in the 1930s.

Jan Ennis, CEO of Ennco Display Group and one of the judges of INVISION’s America’s Finest Optical Retailers contest, said of eyeSMILE Vision + Dental: “A great example of a building repurpose. Having a throwback to the gas station in the waiting room is classic.”

David Duralde, chief creative officer of OGI Eyewear, praised the business’s “very novel presentation of focusing on the smile in conjunction with dental care and eyecare. The office seems to be very well run and the team does an outstanding job of taking care of individuals and helping them look their best.”

The optometric and dental practices share a central check-in, waiting room, playroom, restrooms and check-out, creating operational synergy.

The Joneses’ goal was to create a space where “patients experienced small-town hospitality coupled with the look and feel of something more urban.”

Raw brick and window openings in the waiting room are from the original 1930s structure.

The break room is outfitted with red-and-white diner chairs with retro diner tables.

Glass block windows and a fireplace dating to a 1940s renovation were salvaged in the treatment planning room.

The location’s original Terrazzo flooring was maintained and now graces the optical space.

A cool moss wall fills the space of the original exterior gas station windows.

There is significant overlap in the interactions between the dental and optometric businesses. Oftentimes patients will schedule their eye exam on the same day as a routine dental cleaning. “This has certainly helped our recall scheduling,” says Stacey Jones, OD.

eyeSMILE recently added a fully operational 1955 AMI G-120 Jukebox to the check-in area. “It’s super cool and patients of all ages love it,” says Dr. Jones.
