Bad News for Opternative: Georgia Passes Bill Requiring In-Person Eye Exams for Prescriptions

 

Legislation strikes blow to online eye exam services.

Georgia has passed legislation that requires an in-person eye exam to obtain a prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, Vision Monday reports. The article says that Georgia House Bill 775 “restricts online vision testing services and could impact other forms of remote or mobile eye testing. Violators who issue prescriptions based solely on objective refractive data would be held accountable.” The legislation is yet another hurdle to clear for Opternative – the disruptive Chicago startup that offers online refractive eye exams which produce prescriptions. As the company seeks to expand into more states, it’s undergoing increased scrutiny as the American Optometric Association argues to the FDA that the Opternative exam should be removed from the market.
