Black Eyecare Perspective: The 13% Promise

Black Eyecare Perspective (BEP) is here to raise the alarm regarding the inequality found within the Eyecare arena. First steps involve, identifying the issues, presenting sound and equitable solutions, and finding ways to realize the needed outcomes. Data from the US. Census shows that 13.4% of the U.S. population identifies as African American. This is a far cry from the representation currently present in the vision care world. We are asking for equity in black representation in Eye Care Companies, Colleges of Optometry and Optometry Boards. Black Eye Perspectives (BEP) will work with everyone to create a specified plan to help get everyone’s numbers up to 13%. We are asking for 13% equity. For those willing to commit to the pledge, BEP will provide diversity resources and accountability to help achieve reach targeted goals.

Where We Are Now
  • 3.2% of students in Optometry School are African Americans
  • 1.8% of practicing Optometrist are African Americans
  • 3.8% of faculty in Colleges of Optometry are African Americans

So, what is our ask. Well it’s simple increases diversity in all organization to at least 13% by taking on the 13% challenge. By 2025 we want all organizations to be up to the 13% mark and BEP is here to help.

Our Goal
  • 13% of students in optometry identify as African American
  • 13% of Company Speaker Bureau’s identify as African American
  • 13% of Marketing Budget spent on African Americans
  • 13% of Executive level positions filled by African Americans
  • 13% of Frame lines designed for and by African Americans
  • 13% of the faculty at colleges identify as African American
  • 13% of donations going toward African American lead organizations
