Devo Front Man Is Now an Eyewear Designer

On stage, his eyeglasses were a trademark – and a trophy.

If you watched MTV in the 1970s, you probably remember the alt-rock group named Devo, five otherwise bland-looking men who occasionally appeared with what looked like inverted plastic flower pots on their heads. If you remember Devo, you remember the glasses. Front man Mark Mothersbaugh made the group’s eyeglasses a signature trait, and it turns out he designed many of them himself. Mothersbaugh has partnered with eyewear mogul Shane Baum to produce some of those designs in a line of frames. First on the market is an homage to a pair of stainless steel glasses he wore for years on stage and particularly loved. As did his fans. “People would reach up and the next thing you know the glasses would be gone,” he says, “and I’d go, well, I’ve got three more back in the dressing room.” Baum is a Devo fan, by the way, calling Mothersbaugh “a childhood hero” and “an insanely creative guy.”
