Idaho Moving Toward Sales-Tax Exemption for Eyeglasses

If governor signs new law, only five states will still impose tax.

A bill exempting prescription eyeglasses and contacts from Idaho sales tax has narrowly survived an 18-17 vote in the state senate and is on its way to the governor’s desk. Opposition has been largely focused on the potential loss of $2.8 million in tax revenues. If approved by the governor, the exemption will leave only five states that still impose a sales tax on glasses, according to an optometry lobbyist involved in the Idaho debate. As with most such exemptions elsewhere, frames purchased independent of an optometrist exam would still be subject to Idaho tax.
