Better Vision

If No Two Patients Are the Same, Then Their Lenses Need to Be Customized

MEASUREMENT DEVICES HAVE become more efficient and can now simulate different lenses for patients, often through a handheld tablet. “A visual simulator is a very powerful tool for patients,” says Dr. Josh Rajasansi. “It can also make a huge difference in accuracy with the head angle and position of eyes in the frame to have more precision of measurement when making a lens.” Zeiss is spearheading a new category with its Zeiss SmartLife Young Single Vision lenses that incorporate the age-specific parameters of children as they grow from kids to teenagers. Since their facial anatomy changes this results in changing parameters of wear in the lens design.

Smart Ways to Sell Personlaized Lens Designs

DREW LANGTON, OD House of Optical

The basics of customizable lenses are to first figure out what patients’ issues are and what they spend their days doing. Someone who spends time at a screen may need computer glasses, whereas someone who drives for Uber must be comfortable driving at night. We sell a lot of Kodak’s DRO lenses which are great in terms of patient satisfaction. Kodak allows us to do everything at our own labs. New technology has dropped our remake rates. We do as much as we can in-house so we can control the quality and timeline; it depends on what we have in stock. We’ll schedule an eye exam with patients, check the health of their eyes, update their Rx, let them browse our frames, and then order their lenses. We can give them a basic set of glasses within one hour. Specialty lenses may take longer.

For patients who are glasses-eligible, we ask lifestyle questions. We’ll ask them what they like or dislike about their current glasses. The patient is often afraid to try something new. We determine the lens that will work for them and suggest frames. Our optician explains the difference between materials, telling them what is thinner, lighter, better. We tell them we’ll optimize their Rx based on their needs so the lens is glare and reflective free and offers better vision. Hoya’s MySV lens compensated with 360 comfort vision technology is just phenomenal and offers a solution for space, screen, and zoom. It’s a custom digital lens. I also recommend Hoya’s progressive lenses — iD Lifestyle series — for heavy screen users. The curvature of the lens can fit into the shape of a frame for maximum vision.
