Lighthouse Guild Explores Developments in Artificial Vision in New Episode of Its Podcast

(PRESS RELEASE) NEW YORK – The Development of Artificial Vision is the topic of the latest episode of the Lighthouse Guild podcast, “On Tech & Vision with Dr. Cal Roberts.” This is the fourth episode of the podcast exploring big ideas on how technology is helping people with vision loss.

In this episode, the host Dr. Calvin W. Roberts, president and CEO of Lighthouse Guild, talks about cutting edge advancements in ocular bionic prosthetics. Dr. Roberts and his guest, Dr. Mark Humayun, director, USC Ginsburg Institute for Biomedical Therapeutics, co-director USC Roski Eye Institute and developer of the Argus II, discuss the device and how it uses a camera and a chip to stimulate the retina and send signals to the brain. They cover the importance of the collaboration between developers and early adopters. Dr. Humayun talks about the engineering, neurophysiology, and surgical challenges they had to overcome to get to where they are, as well as what kind of advancements might be possible in the future.
