Maui Jim Enters Optical Market with 62-Style Collection

It’s focused on sunglasses for nearly 40 years.

LAHAINA, HI — Independent sunglass brand Maui Jim has announced the launch of its first ophthalmic eyewear collection.

The collection includes six lens materials and 62 frame styles featuring “proprietary technology, bold shapes, and delicate designs and patterns,” according to a press release.

“At Maui Jim we’ve always been a technical lens company at heart, and now we’re turning that proficiency and focus toward the next chapter in our story — the Maui Jim Optical Collection,” said Craig LaManna, Maui Jim marketing director, ophthalmic. “This collection of frames is as sophisticated in their engineering as they are elegant in their styling. We believe in the perfect balance of art and science, which is why we developed premium proprietary lenses to go along with our beautiful Maui Jim frames.”

The collection features frames made from acetate, specialty metals and thin injected nylon. All ophthalmic frames are made in Italy and Japan.

The collection is now available throughout the U.S. from independent eyecare practices, specialty retailers and optical chains.

Fast Company called the decision to get into the optical market a “bold move” for a company that’s focused on sunglasses for nearly four decades.

The magazine quoted Jay Black, the company’s vice president of global marketing, saying: “Our customers had been asking us to go into the optical market for years. We wanted to make sure that when we did it, our optical lenses were just as high-tech and high quality as our sunglasses.”
