Optometrist Honey Rose Found Guilty of Manslaughter

Jury reached its verdict after deliberating for just over two hours.

British optometrist Honey Rose was found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter after she failed to spot an eye condition in 8-year-old Vincent Barker, who later died of a fluid build-up in his brain, BBC reports.

The prosecution claimed that at the time of Barker’s eye exam, there were “obvious abnormalities” in both of his eyes, referring to photographs that were taken before Rose examined him, and that his death could have been prevented “had she done her job properly.” The article explains that the prosecution argued that Rose’s conduct had been so far below the expected standard that it was “criminal.” For her part, Rose said she was “sure” she conducted a proper examination, maintaining that she “didn’t miss anything.”

The article adds that the jury found her guilty after deliberating for just over two hours. The trial lasted for 10 days.
