Optometrist Indicted on Health Care Fraud Charge

He allegedly billed for services not rendered.

A New Jersey optometrist has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of health care fraud.

Dr. Vincent J. Gamuzza operated multiple vision centers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. He’s alleged to have submitted claims to health insurer Highmark Inc. for medical services that were not rendered.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Gamuzza holds franchise agreements with 11 Pearle Vision centers in the region through Gamuzza Inc. He also runs a New Jersey eyecare clinic.
Gamuzza, 30, of Hazlet, NJ, was arrested Thursday, according to the newspaper.

Health care fraud carries a maximum total sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both, according to the Department of Justice.

The Tribune-Review reports that Gamuzza could not be reached for comment.
