Oscar-Winning Actor Javier Bardem Is Helping the World See Through His Iris

Javier Bardem has made a career of playing intense characters on the big screen.

The Spanish actors’ deep gravelly voice and steely gaze have been hallmarks of some of his most famous roles, such as his Oscar-winning turn in No Country For Old Men and his iconic portrayal of a James Bond villain in Skyfall.

Off the silver screen, Bardem, along with his wife Penelope Cruz, is known for his charity work. He’s lent his support to a range of organizations and causes including:

He recently partnered with the Eyes of the World Foundation for his latest charitable outreach: Supporting eyecare in developing countries. Bardem “donated” his iris as part of the nonprofit’s Irises of the World project.

A magnified image of Bardem’s iris will go on auction Thursday, Sept. 29. The starting bid is $9,000. The auction closes Thursday, Oct. 6. The winning bidder will receive the image in two formats: A digital NFT (non-fungible token) and a printed photograph signed and dedicated by the actor.

Proceeds from the action will go to improving the eye health of individuals in impoverished countries.

The Foundation’s main focus is on addressing the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness. It currently operates in the Sahara region, Mozambique, Bolivia and Mali, among other territories.

ClearVision’s Faceboo Returns in Support of the Pumpkin Patch Project

ClearVision Optical’s annual Faceboo costume contest for eyecare professionals returns this October. However, this year’s event comes with a twist. A trick of a treat, if you will.

ClearVision, through its pediatric eyewear line Dilli Dalli, has joined forces with the Pumpkin Patch Project to help spread awareness for amblyopia and vision impairment in children this Halloween season.

Parents of children with amblyopia will be asked to submit photos on Facebook of pumpkins decorated with eyepatches or their children wearing their patches. ClearVision will select weekly winners.

As for ECPs looking to join in, instead of posting pictures of Halloween costumes like in previous years, ClearVision is asking for pictures of pumpkins. The squash pics will compete in three categories: Best Pumpkin Patch Pumpkin. Best Jack-o’-lantern. Most Creative.

There will be one winner in each category.

May the best gourds win!

Two Doctors Join ‘Make It Easy’ Video Series

The Contact Lens Institute (CLI) this summer kicked off an initiative to help promote the proper usage and care of contact lens.

CLI produced a series of short videos to assist eyecare professionals teach best practices to first-time users just getting started and to long-time wearers who’ve slipped in their diligence.

The first batch of 1-2 minute videos featured eight ODs from across the country. Two California doctors recently joined their ranks with videos of their own: Jennifer Wademan, OD, of Bidwell Optometry in Folsom (just outside Sacramento), and Jason Tu, OD, of Invision Optometry in San Diego.

You can watch the latest editions below. You can find the first group of videos in our original post. The Contact Lens Institute also has created a playlist of all 10 videos for staff training purposes.
