Primary Eyecare Network Offering Educational Events in September

Primary Eyecare Network, a division of ABB OPTICAL GROUP, is pleased to offer eye care practitioners several educational events in September.

“Our September calendar offers opportunities for ECPs and office staff to better prepare for the October 1st transition to ICD-10, as well as learn more about frame styling and eye wear adjustments," said PEN Marketing and Education Manager Mary Eastwood, OD, FAAO.

"We also are pleased to offer six hours of American Board of Opticianry (ABO) or Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) continuing education credit in one day at our popular, bi-annual Quick Six event."

The schedule for September includes:


  • September 2 – Preparing for ICD-10 Webinar

    12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. PDT – Free for PEN members; $15 for non-members
    Offered in partnership with CS Eye, an independent consulting company focused on compliance in the optometry industry, this seminar will provide an overview on preparing for ICD-10 before the new coding system is implemented October 1.
  • September 10 – TOMMI: The ABCs of OCT
    5 p.m. to 9 p.m. PDT – Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif.; Free
    Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is one of the most important advances in retinal diagnosis since ophthalmoscopy. Held in conjunction with The Optometric Medical Model Initiative (TOMMI) from Optovue, this course will present the basics, from normal scans to rare disorders, and will cover pathognomonic OCT findings and how to identify abnormal scans. In addition, fundus photos will be contrasted with OCT scans for a better understanding of the various disorders encountered clinically. Presented by Jerome Sherman, OD, Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. Approved for two hours of continuing education from the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education (COPE).
  • September 23 – Quick Six
    9 a.m. to 4 p.m. PDT – Emeryville, Calif.
    Full Day: $225 for PEN members; $340 for non-members
    Hourly: $45 per hour for PEN members; $68 per hour for non-members
    An opportunity for six hours of American Board of Opticianry (ABO) or Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) continuing education credit in one day.Topics include optical crosses, eyewear troubleshooting, boosting office staff morale, prism prescriptions and building patient loyalty. Presented by Mary Schmidt, an American Board of Opticianry certified optician and certified paraoptometric.
  • September 30 – Frame Adjusting Workshop
    9 a.m. to 12 p.m. PDT – Pleasanton, Calif.
    $95 for PEN members; $140 for non-members
    Learn how to provide your patients with the comfort and vision they deserve from their eyewear. Attend this interactive workshop for fundamental, practical, hands-on frame adjusting experience. You will learn front-to-back, custom adjustment techniques on both plastic and metal frames. In addition to common adjustments, the workshop will cover troubleshooting and problem adjustments. Presented by Mindi Lewis, an American Board of Opticianry certified optician. Approved for two hours of ABO continuing education credit.
  • September 30 – Frame Selection Workshop
    1 p.m. to 4 p.m. PDT – Pleasanton, Calif.
    $95 for PEN members; $140 for non-members
    Also presented by Lewis and approved for two hours of ABO continuing education credit, this informative, hands-on workshop is recommended for all optical staff to learn an innovative process for selecting frames that are comfortable, attractive and the best eyewear choices for your patients’ vision needs. The workshop also will feature current collections of designer frames.
