Prolific Shoplifter Gets 4-Year Sentence After 1000-Plus Thefts: “We Build Prisons for People Like Him”

A man called Barry Sanders was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony theft charge, his latest crime in a career of shoplifting that includes more than 1000 such instances in the Portland, OR area, the KGW8 news station reports.

This is not the first time the 60-year-old Sanders has been caught. He has previously admitted in court papers to being a “talented, professional thief” and has also admitted to violating his probation after agreeing to stay out of Portland-area stores including Fred Meyer, Safeway, Target and Home Depot, according to the article.

Detectives have nicknamed Sanders the “Hamburglar” due to his proclivity for stealing meat and seafood.

“He will never change,” Kevin Demer, Multnomah County Senior Deputy District Attorney told the outlet. “We build prisons for people like him.”
