Study: Daily Disposables Cause Less Eye Damage Than Other Contact Lenses

A new study suggests that daily disposable contact lenses are less damaging to the ocular surface than reusable lenses are.

Healio reports that researchers studied 71 people who hadn’t worn contacts before. They were assigned to use either daily disposable hydrogel contact lenses, daily disposable silicone hydrogel contact lenses or reusable silicone hydrogel contact lenses.

The subjects were instructed to wear the lenses for about 10 hours a day for three months.

The researchers compared the groups at the end of the study, concluding, “The wear of daily disposable CLs can be considered to cause less damage to the ocular surface and less increase in proinflammatory cytokine levels.”

Healio quoted the researchers stating, “Frequent replacement of lenses prevents accumulation of deposits on the lens and provides more comfortable use of contact lenses.”

The study was published in the scientific journal Cornea.
