Amazon Sued Over Eclipse Glasses

The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status.

A South Carolina man and woman say they suffered eye damage as a result of viewing the Aug. 21 solar eclipse with defective eyewear — and they’re blaming Amazon.

The couple, Thomas Corey Payne and Kayla Harris, filed a lawsuit against the e-commerce company in U.S. District Court in Charleston, SC, GeekWire reports. Among their claims is that Amazon was negligent in permitting the sale of the products.

According to the lawsuit, after watching the eclipse with the glasses, Payne and Harris “began to see dark spots in their line of vision” and “suffered vision impairment, including blurriness, a central blind spot, increased sensitivity, changes in perception of color, and distorted vision.”

They’re seeking class-action status for the suit.

In mid-August, Amazon warned many customers by email that glasses they had purchased did not have proper safety certification. But Payne and Harri say they never received such a warning.

The legal complaint doesn’t say who produced the eyewear.
