Bioptic Wearers Can Now Get a Driver’s License in Pennsylvania

Users of bioptic telescope lenses are now eligible to earn a driver’s license in Pennsylvania.

A learner’s permit is now an option for those “with a visual activity less than 20/100 combined but with at least 20/200 visual activity in the best-corrected eye,” WTAJ reports.

PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian stated, “This law makes significant changes that will ultimately increase many of our residents’ independence and enhance their quality of life.”

Several requirements must be met in order to be eligible for the permit. Among them, applicants must undergo a minimum of 10 hours of front seat passenger-in-car instruction with a low-vision rehabilitation professional.

Drivers using bioptics will have several restrictions. For example, they can only drive during the daytime and can’t use freeways.

YourErie.com reports that bioptics users in most other states are able to drive.
