Smart Ways to Sell Myopia Management Tools

I’ve been using myopia prevention and control for five years. We have seen some patients with strong genetic characteristics for high myopia flatline and not progress. These are undeniable clinical results based on using all four strategies currently available. 1. We are an orthokeratology practice so we use ortho-k lenses to change the shape of the cornea overnight. 2. We prescribe center distance multifocal soft CLs to correct myopia. 3. For children with myopic astigmatism, our top strategy is hybrid lenses. 4. Low dose atropine drops. Based on a conversation with the parents, we prescribe a solution. We present the pros and cons of each and offer guidance.

For children with developing myopia or progressing myopia, or even children with high risk, such as having high myope parents, we counsel parents and children on the importance of myopia control. We discuss the implication of having it, the average rate of progression and morbidity of eye diseases related to myopia. We advise lifestyle changes and present different methods employed by ECPs to flatten the rate of progression. As for professional management, I recommend the three methods that have strong evidence of providing effective control: orthokeratology, atropine therapy and daytime multifocal contact lenses. I prefer orthokeratology because it offers an added benefit of freedom from daytime glasses and CLs for the child.
