Male Presbyopes Often in Denial about Need for Glasses

Nearly one third say they feel less attractive wearing them.

Regardless of the fashion inroads made in recent years by eyeglasses, a substantial percent of presbyopes still feel they look older and less attractive in them, according to British research. The perception is most common among men, who are also most likely given to denial. “By sneakily borrowing other people’s ready readers for close work, they mistakenly believe that they have cheated presbyopia, even though those closest to them probably won’t be fooled,” says David Cartwright, optometrist and chairman of the UK’s National Eye Health Week coming up in September. Cartwright cited research showing that 30 per cent of male presbyopes feel less attractive in glasses and 24 per cent say they look older.
