New Optometry School to Open Within 5 Years, Enroll 70 Students

It’s part of a major transition for the college.

Tusculum College in eastern Tennessee is adding an optometry school along with other degree programs.

Administrators hope to launch the programs within five years, the Knoxville News Sentinel reports.

The optometry school is likely to enroll 70 students in its first class.

Tusculum College’s new president, James Hurley, launched the optometry program at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky. And he’s brought on that program’s founding dean, Andrew Buzzelli, as executive vice president for Tusculum’s newly created health sciences college.

Tusculum College is also starting physical therapy, occupational therapy and physician’s assistant programs, according to the News Sentinel. It is also transitioning from college to university.
