Optometry Dean to Step Down

He’ll remain on the faculty.

Earl Smith, dean of the University of Houston College of Optometry, is stepping down from the role.

He’ll leave the post at the end of the current semester, the Daily Cougar reports. A search is underway for his successor.

In a letter posted to the university’s website, Smith wrote that he joined the college faculty in 1978. He began his current stint as dean — his second — in 2015.

“Given UHCO has been my home for 50 years since setting foot on campus as a student, my decision to step down was not one taken lightly,” he wrote. “Rest assured I will continue to work to advance the College during the search for the next Dean, and well beyond as I transition back to the faculty.”
