UK Eyewear Retailer MyOptique Bought By French Lens-maker

 

Company was founded in 2004 by university student.

French firm Essilor has bought U.K.-based online eyewear retailer MyOptique, The Telegraph reports. The article says the French lens-making giant paid about $160 million for MyOptique, which was started in 2004 and whose brands include Glasses Direct and the Sunglasses Shop. MyOptique founder Murray Wells, who began the company in 2004 as a student at the University of West England, told the publication that he set up the website with help from developers at the university and worked out of his parents’ home. “It’s amazing to see how far it’s grown,” Wells said. He left MyOptique for Google in 2013.
