Fitness Trackers Show ECPs Putting in the Miles

EVER WONDER WHERE your finely shaped calves came from? According to the 2021 INVISION Big Survey, ECPs are truly walking the walk: about 40 percent clock an average of 5 miles or more a day as they do the rounds of their store or practice. To be sure, we do have less active readers. Seventeen percent of the respondents to our survey are barely covering a mile a day.

Our data was based on eyecare pros who wear trackers like a Fitbit or an Apple Watch and a typical person’s stride length of 2.1 to 2.5 feet. That means it takes over 2,000 steps to walk one mile and 10,000 steps would be almost 5 miles.

While there is debate over the optimum number of steps to aim for a day – recent studies suggest the gains top out at about 8,000 steps — the basic rule remains, physical activity has great health benefits. That suggests almost half of our vision pros should be trying to move around a bit more during the day, assuming they are not getting exercise outside of work.
