(PRESS RELEASE) ST. LOUIS —The World Council of Optometry (WCO) has reported a significant turnout for its first-ever Latin America-based virtual event series, “Myopia Management: From Theory to Practice,” with more than 3,000 attending eye care professionals representing 25 countries across the region. The free conference, held in partnership with CooperVision, a global leader in addressing myopia, took place over four days in February.

WCO President Dr. Sandra Block said, “Having thousands of optometrists and staff sign up and participate in our multi-day webinar shows widespread enthusiasm for myopia management in the region. While we still have a long way to go before it becomes a standard of care in Latin America, the engagement we saw signifies a promising outlook for the advancement of mitigating, measuring, and managing myopia. We look forward to holding more regional events in the future.”

The virtual series was conducted entirely in Spanish on February 20, 22, 27, and 29. Each day’s session offered practical recommendations from eye care professionals who have successfully integrated myopia management into their clinical practices, plus live Q&A sessions.

The WCO myopia management standard of care resolution was introduced in April 2021, defining an evidence-based standard of care comprised of the three main pillars of mitigation, measurement, and management.
