LensCrafters is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

The company announced the milestone in earnest earlier this year with a widely distributed press release. A special marketing campaign focusing on the milestone and featuring the actress Sharon Stone will run throughout 2023. The retailer previously paired with the award-winning Hollywood movie star in 2022’s “Your Eyes First” ad campaign.

In March, LensCrafters president and general manager, Alfonso Cerullo, gave a short speech during a champagne toast at the company’s booth at Vision Expo East 2023 in New York.

“We are there to help people,” said Cerullo, during the toast. “We are not there because there is a patient. We are there because we are engaged, we are motivated, and we love what we do. And we all know that when you love something, you care. That is all of us.”

LensCrafters opened its first store in Florence, KY, in 1983. The company quickly became an optical industry juggernaut behind its approach of providing eyewear “while you wait.” LensCrafters underwent an aggressive expansion under the ownership of U.S. Shoe. By the end of the 1980s there were more than 300 storefronts across the U.S.

Luxottica (now EssilorLuxottica) purchased the company in 1995. Expansion of the LensCrafters brand has continued through today. There are now more than 1,000 LensCrafters locations in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Just last summer, the company opened its fourth flagship store in Palo Alto, CA.

All four flagship stores, including two in New York City and one in San Francisco, were opened since 2020. Each flagship features an increased selection of designer eyewear brands, including Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, and Persol.

“As we continue to invest in our 1,000+ store fleet, and successfully merge our online business with the in-store digital experience, we look forward to advancing the LensCrafters brand this year and next with the rollout of new flagship stores which will give us a larger footprint in the eyewear market,” said Cerullo, in a press release.
