The Latest EHR and EMR Updates Are Off the Charts

The acronyms EHR and EMR are essentially interchangeable: both offer a digital record of a patient’s paper chart in real time. An electronic medical record (EMR) contains patients’ medical and treatment histories, but an electronic health record (EHR) goes beyond standard clinical data collected in the office to give a broader view of the patient’s care. EHRs can be shared, so they contain information from all clinicians involved in a patient’s care. The Eyefinity Kiosk can now assign an insurance to each CPT code before transmitting billing information to a practice management system. An image management feature is coming soon. DrChrono recently integrated Square to its EHR cloud-based platform for payment processing, allowing practices to accept and save a patient’s debit and credit card information so funds are deposited and balances updated automatically.

Smart Ways to Use EHR Systems

Dr. Ernie Bowling Gadsden, Al

I’ve been using the DrChrono EHR for five years. Obamacare threw incentives our way if we went electronic; but the biggest incentive of all was that we ran out of space and our files were full. I wanted an EHR system to be cloud-based, portable (with iPad option) and customizable. The learning curve was steep but the DrChrono people were great and continue to be responsive. There’s minimal typing, mostly point and click. The features I like include automatic recalls, the patient portal, appointment notification and the claim filing system. Make a list of what you want, start researching, then cross those that don’t match. When you narrow it down to one or two, contact them for references. In the five years I switched, I’d say I have 10,000 records on a server that are encrypted and HIPAA compliant.

Dr. Timothy Kisla Advanced Eye Care, New Lenox, IL

We were totally paper-based until 2014 when we introduced Modernizing Medicine’s EMR system. We looked at a number of systems but cost-effectiveness was a key component in our decision, as was minimizing downtime while we transitioned. Even though I was dreading it, it turned out to be a relatively easy process. The system itself is user-friendly and intuitive. As an ophthalmologist, I go between locations and I like that it’s easily portable. I carry it on my iPad and have a lot of information at my fingertips. My patients were curious about the transition and now like to ask me about charting on the screen. I take photos of their eyes and upload them to draw diagrams, all while keeping face-to-face contact. It’s also accurate in documenting and assigning medical codes for diagnostic procedures and translating them into appropriate charges. All in all, it’s been very helpful for us.
