French President Francois Hollande’s new spectacles have caused something of a furor because they’re not “Made in France.” In late June, Hollande showed up in public wearing pair of glasses from the Danish firm Lindberg, prompting two French manufacturers to urge a change to glasses made in France. One company, Roussilhe, sent him a letter urging the President be an “ambassador for French eyewear”, at a time when the industry in France is “subject to strong international competition, notably from Asia”. The letter added, “Your choice of frame may suggest that no French company was able to meet your requirements.” Enclosed was a pair of glasses similar to the ones he had chosen.
