Watching a doctor use the latest technology inspires confidence. Clunky, static testing equipment is being replaced by efficient portable devices. Out this summer, QuickSee from PlenOptika is a hand-held, open view autorefractor that runs on wavefront aberrometry. Says CEO Shivang Dave: “Our goal is to help ECPs inside and outside their practices.” Smartphone-based devices are also on the rise. “We’ve modernized a 140-year-old practice by turning a smartphone into a digital ophthalmoscope,” says Spencer Lee, a founder of D-EYE. Eye-Netra offers mobile refractive care. “Most of our business is … to empower ECPs to do eye exams in offices and schools,” says founder Vitor Pamplona. Time to upgrade.

Smart Ways to Use Diagnostic Tools

“I use D-EYE’s digital ophthalmoscope, Think Lab’s digital stethoscope and Oto, an iPhone otoscope from CellScope, in my job as an emergency medicine physician. My patients love these new devices and they think I am the most technology-savvy doctor there is! I think D-EYE is a game changer. It’s so easy to use and takes only a few seconds to examine the back of an eye, even on the youngest of patients. I’ve used it to take video of a floater in someone’s eye to show them what we’re looking at. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and with D-EYE, you have that picture to share.”

“Most ODs are stuck in tradition and don’t get the purpose of portable digital advances that allow them to do out-of-office exams. I’m hired by three colleges to come into their athletic training facilities to give eye exams to the students. I used to have to bring a phoropter and slit lamp with me. Now I use Smart Vision Labs’ autorefractor and EyeNetra’s phoropter, which I can carry in a backpack and traveling suitcase. I use D-EYE’s retinal camera on my smartphone and the Diaton tonometer for eye pressure. It’s so convenient. Everything I have is portable so I have an entire practice with me. In 40 years as an optometrist, I’ve learned that patients want to see change and to know that their eye doctor is up on the latest technologies and using newer equipment. These devices take some learning but if you’re patient, they work.”
