The most mentioned other was check fraud, while gratifyingly many noted they were lucky enough to not have experienced any crime in their businesses. One response however gave us chills: “We had a drive-by shooting that left two windows shattered and bullet casings in our back wall. Had the optician been sitting at his desk it’s doubtful he would be here now. That was scary as it was a beautiful August afternoon and we are literally across the street from a high school.”

Is there a particular prominent businessperson or entrepreneur you admire? In a few words, tell us why.

    • Yes, an old colleague and friend who left the Midwest to move to NYC to work for Google. She is so inspiring, driven and unapologetically her.
    • Dr. Thanh Mai, he’s so innovative.
    • Sarah Blakely, her determination to bring her “simple” product to market is amazing.
    • Cheldin Bartlett Rumer. She encourages women to “Scream their Dreams.”

    • Joanna Gaines, she has great style and she is unapologetically true to her own vision.
    • Lynn Lawrence, he is down to earth but savvy.
    • Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad), acquire assets that produce income.
    • Dave Ramsey, I find him easy to listen to and his advice makes sense.
    • My boss. Because he is all about making the culture at our office one that we enjoy being in.
    • Dan Martel. He is an incredible author and go getter. His book Buy Back Your Time changed my life!
    • A local businesswoman: Synara Brown. Confident, beautiful, caring, strategic, smart and always building her network.
    • A local gentleman who owned a business. He was so community and service oriented. He made our town better, every day.
    • Jason Kirk. He (and Karen) started their own trend in eyewear. People are attempting to copy it all around.
    • David Ogilvy, he was the godfather of the advertising industry, always think creatively in any industry.
    • Robert Bell comes to mind.

  • Dolly Parton, because giving back and empowering our community and future generations is so important.
  • Taylor Swift. She knows her audience and delivers exactly what they want from her. She blazes her own path, does things her way, and recognizes the contributions of her employees. She understands that without them, she wouldn’t be the success she is.
  • Annie Duke, read her book Quit.
  • Sue Creek, she is the VP of Sales for Eyenavision, and is by far the most knowledgeable person about all facets of the eyeglass business.
  • Jaupin, have you seen his designs?! An amazing craftsman.
  • Scrooge McDuck smarter than the smarties and tougher than the toughies. Also work smarter not harder.
