Science is developing faster that seemed possible even a dozen years ago.
Less than a year after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first “bionic eye” to allow partial vision to patients suffering from late-stage retinitis pigmentosa, a leader in the field says that the science of restoring vision to the blind is advancing with speed that would have been considered impossible only a dozen years ago. “Are we there yet? Absolutely not. But we are getting closer,” says Philip Hessburg, M.D., medical director of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. “We are on the cusp of tremendous advances in the field.”
