Optometrist Named Humanitarian of the Year

She’s praised for her “lifetime of service to humanity.”

VOSH International has honored Dr. Bina Patel, a professor at New England College of Optometry, with its Humanitarian of the Year Award.

Patel was honored “for her lifetime of service to humanity, including her work on VOSH medical missions and her contributions to international partnerships and programs for optometrists and students worldwide,” according to a press release from the college.

The award was presented at the annual VOSH International meeting in Anaheim, CA, on Nov. 13.

Other honorees included:

Dr. James Hess, VOSH-Minnesota — Dr. Harry I. Zeltzer Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr. Michel Listenberger, VOSH Historian — President’s Circle Award.

Dr. Clifford Scott, president of NECO, said of Patel: “Having personally traveled with Bina to NECO-affiliated programs on three continents, I am awed by her depth of knowledge of optometry across the world and her international network of influential leaders in optometric education. It was gratifying to see her recognized with VOSH International’s highest award.”

Patel has participated in yearly VOSH medical missions for over 15 years. VOSH explains that the award is presented “to honor an individual who has distinguished him or herself during the year by bringing eye care to underserved populations.”
