As the holiday season approaches, retailers typically bulk up their payrolls with seasonal workers to help deal with the rush of business. Two high-profile retailers – Macy’s and Target – have publicized their hiring plans for the season in recent days.

Target said it plans to hire about 100,000 seasonal employees ahead of the 2023 holidays and Macy’s said its hiring plans call for bringing about 38,000 seasonal workers.

Target is hiring workers for the sales floor, to provide same-day fulfillment services, and sort and ship orders. Those moves and others, mean Target “is making it easier than ever for our guests to embrace the joy of the season” said Chief Growth Officer Christina Hennington. “We’ll have great deals every day, on top of our everyday low prices our only-at-Target exclusives, robust assortment of owned and national brands, new partnerships, and industry-leading fulfillment services.”

In a similar vein, Macy’s Chief Transformation and Human Resources Officer Danielle Kirgan said: “The holidays are one of Macy’s, Inc.’s most important seasons to deliver a great shopping experience for our customers and our colleagues are the company’s greatest brand ambassadors at this special time of year. We are pleased to enhance our team of customer service professionals during the holidays with more than 38,000 seasonal positions. Whether they are looking for extra income for the season or the start of a new career in retail, we offer an unmatched culture, competitive pay and fulfilling retail career opportunities.”

The retailer said it has openings at its Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury stores, as well as its distribution centers.
